It starts with one card. Then you see another cute one, discover a new retailer benefit, and find a template showing fifty cards you didn’t know existed.
Suddenly, your small collection feels like a very long shopping list.
You don’t have to collect everything. You can love an artist, enjoy the hobby, and still decide that three cards from a comeback are plenty.
Start with what you actually like
Choosing one member or era can help give your collection a starting point. But you can also collect favourite outfits, matching colours, or photos that make you smile.
You don’t need a complicated reason.
If you love one card from a set and feel indifferent about the others, you’re allowed to stop at that one. An incomplete template doesn’t mean an incomplete hobby.
Give yourself a budget
Pick an amount that fits comfortably around your everyday expenses. Include shipping, sleeves, and binder supplies, because those costs count too.
It can also help to decide your maximum price for a card before you find it for sale. That gives you something to refer back to when a listing feels especially tempting.
Spending less one month—or buying nothing—is completely fine.
Let your wishlist sit for a while
Save the cards you’re interested in instead of buying every one immediately.
After a little time, you’ll probably notice which ones you keep coming back to. Others may stop feeling quite so essential once the release excitement settles.
A wishlist also helps you keep track of versions and avoid accidentally buying the same card twice.
Learn as you go
Before paying, check the exact card, its condition, the seller’s feedback, and the delivery costs.
Make sure you know whether you’re buying the pictured card or a random inclusion. If the listing leaves something important unclear, ask.
You don’t have to know every collecting term straight away. Each purchase is a chance to learn a little more.
Allow your collection to change
Maybe you start with one member and later prefer collecting favourite photos across the group. Maybe you discover that one binder is enough.
You can change your mind without explaining it to anyone.
Leave pockets empty, take a break, or narrow your wishlist. Your cards will still be there when you feel like looking through them.
The nicest collection is one you enjoy owning. Take your time filling it.
